Chapter 32
June 8
We met again, me and H. We both showed up at the park about the same time. A few people were around a couple of kids and their mom and we sat on two different benches again. When they left we talked. Thatâs all, talk.
I asked him if anyone knew he came, he said he dudnât think so and told me he can get out cause his mama works so much. I told him I could come cause my mom drinks so much.
His mama works to jobs. During the day she cleans white peoplesâ houses. And evenings, she works at this expensive restaurant in Oxford and cooks for them. Makes the best crab cakes anywhere and does a bunch of other cooking.
Then H stopped and looked around, making sure no one else could hear and said My mama can cook in that Fine restaurant for all those white folks, but says if she brought me and my brothers in the front door, weâd all be thrown out.
Erin looked up at Darrell. Theyâd eaten at just such a restaurant last week, maybe the same one. Thinking back, Darrell tried to recall how many black faces heâd seen on their dinner date. One, behind the bar.
Maybe some things hadnât changed that much.
Erin returned to her narration.
Here, his mom is working hard to take care of 5 kids. And my mom who likes to get blitzed all the time and is living off welfare and sheâs the one who says you canât trust them No Account N word. Who do you think I believe?

We met on Our benches and H told me we canât meet there no more, because itâs too public. His brother found out and is worried that us being seen together will cause trouble. Because weâre talking, sitting on two different benches!
H would like to keep seeing me and got a plan. He can pick me up in his car. Diary, did I tell you He Has A Car? Itâs an old car heâs fixing up, but its his. He knows a place where we can go where nobody will see. Then he got all serious and told me he was going into Baltimore tomorrow to hear Martin Luther King, Jr. Yeah, the Negro civil rights leader whoâs been arrested and been in the news! I asked if I could come. He looked surprised, but said yes. Tomorrow Iâm going to ride in his car to Baltimore!

God, me and H almost got arrested last night. He picked me up outside of townâwhere nobody would see usâand we rode into Baltimore, although it took us an hour. Pulled up at this church, and a bunch of Negroes were going in and we followed. I wasnât the only white girl but there were only a few others. People seemed nice, just nervous and excited. Up front behind the pulpit was this short handsome Negro man in a black suit and small mustache and I learned later he was this Martin Luther King, Jr.
